Lisa Underwood
Artist & Instructor
My work, as an artist and instructor, is about connections. The process of creating in a group, or alone, has a natural way of letting us connect with one another and ourselves. Actively engaging in art making is a component of self-care. It significantly reduces cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone. Helping others experience the benefits of art making is one of my missions. For me, creating art is a therapeutic necessity that brings balance and joy to my life.
I'm an illustrator and painter who also loves to quill and create mixed media pieces. My Textile & Interior Design background is a big influence. I have worked as a Color Separation Artist for detailed textile designs. I was also a Colorist for the wallcovering industry. And I still offer Interior Design consultation. Nature has always been an inspiration for my art. Since I explore various mediums, I challenge myself to connect the art forms. I want my work to reflect a unified visual voice.
Teaching also plays a big role in my creative journey. It's a platform for exchanging stimulating ideas that enhance our visual expression. The benefits of art making are evident with each participant. (see Creative Group Programs) I love getting others involved in the creative process; not only students, but my commission clients as well. Promoting Social Creativity, and the benefits of visual self-expression is my life work.
I'm in a happy place when I'm teaching or creating. Or when I'm hiking!
Individual and commercial commissions are always welcome!
